Coronation Street reveals Asha’s devastating new story in 19 spoiler pictures
A Coronation Street star has blasted Oxford actress Miriam Margolyes in a war of words.
The Harry Potter actress, who was born in and grew up in the city, starred in several of the wizarding world’s films as Professor Sprout.
Known for her character actor work across film, television, and stage, she received the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs Mingott in Martin Scorsese’s 1993 film, The Age of Innocence.
Now Coronation Street actress Maureen Lipman has branded Ms Margolyes a “shock jock” and a “potty-mouthed controversialist”.
Ms Margolyes, who is Jewish, recently spoke to The Big Issue about Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
The actress said that it reminded her of the Holocaust and added: “The terrible thing I face is that Hitler won.
“He changed us, made us like him.”
Writing in The Spectator, Ms Lipman, who is also Jewish, said: “At least her opinion is thought-through, measured and civil.
“Miriam Margolyes, on the other hand, is a shock jock, a potty-mouthed controversialist and self-publicist, so I’m uninterested in her latest PR splash comparing Israelis to Nazis and the Gazan war to the Holocaust.”
After her comments, there were calls for Ms Margolyes to be stripped of her OBE, which was awarded in 2002 for Services to drama.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) responded to her remarks and has labelled them as “repugnant”.
