Coronation Street exposes Theo’s dark past tonight – and it’s very worrying

Coronation Street will delve into Theo’s dark past in tonight’s episode. After presenting several red flags in his relationship with Todd, Theo’s history of abusive behaviour will come to light after a run-in with his ex-boyfriend Owen.

Scheduled to air at 8pm, the latest instalment will see Theo and Todd embarking on a night out with Sean, James, Mary, Glenda and Christina.

After locking eyes with Owen in a club, however, Theo finds himself arguing with his ex outside. Detailing his pattern of abuse, Owen recalls all the times Theo tried to control and gaslight him, while blaming the church and his conversion therapy for his toxic behaviour.

Later in the episode, Todd catches Theo and Owen talking outside, but when Theo opens up about his past relationship, he changes the narrative, telling Todd that Owen used to control him, before accusing Todd of doing the same and of flirting with James at the club.

While Todd attempts to diffuse the situation, Theo storms off and heads back into town, leaving a stunned Todd behind.

For James Cartwright, who plays Theo, the ongoing storyline between Theo and Todd has been an emotional one to portray. Joining Soap Scoop, the podcast from Inside Soap magazine, the actor recalled crying in his car after shooting a scene in which Theo’s abusive behaviour turned physical.

“There was a scene where Theo shoved a kebab in Todd’s face. I’ve never told anyone – not the press anyway – but when I got in the car on the way home, I cried,” Cartwright explained.

“There’s a horrible bit where if you watch the scene, I grab his face and I put the kebab in, which was horrible. Then he turns away, and he’s such a lovely lad, and he turns away, and I physically re-correct his face to carry on. That moment of imposing yourself on someone felt horrible,” he continued.

For the time being, Theo and Todd’s tumultuous relationship will continue to play out on screen.

In next week’s episodes, a concerned Todd will confide in his ex-boyfriend Billy after missing Noah’s funeral to get checked for bowel cancer. When Theo arrives back from the funeral, however, he’s furious to find Todd and Billy together in The Rovers, growing even angrier when he learns that Todd has promised they’ll go to dinner with Christina and George that evening.

“Theo hates Todd’s friends, and that’s a major red flag,” our Corrie insider shares. “He’s already punished Todd for spending time with Billy and tried to threaten them both, but if he really wants to isolate Todd, he’ll have to take on more than just Billy.”
