Emmerdale fans ‘work out’ Kev’s history with Robert Sugden amid ‘illness’ bombshell

Kev arrived to see Robert before dropping a major bombshell on his husband

Emmerdale fans think they’ve worked out Robert Sugden and Kev’s history after the latter suddenly arrived in the village.

Actor Ryan Hawley reprised his role as Robert Sugden earlier this year to try and put a stop to Aaron Dingle’s wedding to John Sugden.

While he was unsuccessful, viewers will recall that John’s list of harrowing crimes was exposed after he confessed everything to Aaron before throwing them both over the cliff edge.

John may have fled the country, but Aaron is far from “normal” as he attempts to adjust to life in the village again after everything that happened.

Although he hoped Robert would comfort him, Robert told Aaron he would help him as mates.

During Monday’s (September 29) installment, a mystery visitor arrived in the village to see Robert. It was revealed that the man is Kev Townsend – Robert’s husband.

Their meeting appeared awkward, with Kev insisting they go up to Robert’s bedroom. Even after kissing, Robert appeared uncomfortable around him.

Asking why he was allowed day release following his crimes, Kev admitted that he had only been given six months to live – a statement that Victoria later grew suspicious of.

Now, fans have been trying to figure out how the pair met as Robert was imprisoned on the Isle of Wight and Kev seems to be local to the village.

On a Reddit thread, u/Environmental-Tea-48 questioned: “The introduction of Kev has raised so many questions for me. Where exactly did Robert and Kev meet? I’ve always assumed Robert spent essentially his whole sentence in a prison on the Isle of Wight.

“But Kev is clearly local, he’s on day release, and he mentioned it was a shame he and Rob only crossed paths when Rob went back inside. So that suggests Robert must have been in the local prison too. Did he transfer back at some point without anyone knowing? Which doesn’t make much sense, especially since we know Vic used to write to him, so she would have known if he had been moved.

“It also makes me wonder why Robert was beaten up the first time he went back inside, right after the wedding. Was he a target because he’s Kev’s husband?”

The same viewer wondered if Robert had been visiting Kev over the last few months without telling anyone else.

u/Cold-Society3325 replied: “My theory is they met on the Isle of Wight. There’s no way an armed robber would serve the bulk of their sentence in Hotten which looks to be a category C prison. I think that, when Kev’s terminal diagnosis happened, he was granted a move to a prison near his husband on compassionate grounds. This will have been recently.”

Another viewer, u/msbtvxq agreed: “I don’t know how it works in real life, but I’m imagining it could be like this in Emmerdale-land: Robert’s home address is in the north, so they let him be out on licence up there, with a local probation officer. When he was sent back to prison, they made space for him in his local area instead of going through the effort of transporting him back to the Isle of Wight.

“Kev must also have been on the Isle of Wight if Robert spent most of his sentence there (and he can’t have been in Hotten prison where Robert was in June, since Robert got beaten up there without anyone protecting him). He is also a northerner, so maybe the justice system let him have his day release in the north (he sounds like he’s from Manchester, doesn’t he?) so that he can spend his last few months with family. And obviously that would involve transferring to a different prison to spend his nights.”
